Seven accused members of Germany's far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
