The English and Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a group together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a convincing win, with their opponents failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six group winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
